HIKING THE CHILLAR RIVER
The Rio Chillar is within easy reach of Nerja and is a great attraction for the whole family. The trail goes along the riverbed – yes, you walk in the water. However, the river looks like a stream here, which, squeezing through the rocks, creates small reservoirs in which you can swim. The whole trip is very pleasant, because the water and rocks are nice to cool down, and the kids have great fun, because first you can enter the water with your shoes on, second you can splash, and thirdly you can wade between the stones and level up. Along the trail, we encounter forest, waterfalls and narrow passages between rocks.
SETENIL – A CITY IN SCALE
Setenil belongs to pueblo bianco, or white villages, whose houses whitewashed with lime create an interesting sight. There are many such villages in Andalusia and it is worth visiting them. However, what distinguishes this particular place are its houses nestled in the rocks. They look like they are pressed into a rock block, but their advantage is that it is much cooler there. So it’s worth eating in one of the restaurants located just under the rock, because the temperature there is at least 10 degrees lower than outside.
THE SMURFS VILLAGE
I was very curious about this attraction because of the kids. Juzcar, because we are talking about this village, is completely painted blue. It does look interesting. There are several large Smurfs figures in the village where children are eager to take pictures of themselves. Apparently, there are also various workshops taking place here, including face painting, but we couldn’t find where it was or we were at the wrong time. There were also paintings on the walls, but someone told us they were painted over. However, we found a huge statue of Smurfette in the church, that’s just such a curiosity. Generally, children, especially the smallest ones, were very excited about the trip. My son wanted to directly enter private apartments, the doors of which faced the sidewalk, in search of blue creatures. However, in my opinion, the idea is a bit wasted there. Lots of marketing, but nothing to do with it (or we hit so badly).
CAMINITO DEL REY
Caminito del Rey – the King’s Path – is a must-see attraction, unless you are afraid of heights. The sidewalks hanging high above the gorge make an amazing impression, plus steep rocks and a bridge suspended 100 meters above the water, on which you have to cross to the other side to get out of Caminito. The trip is not exhausting, most of the kilometers it is just a leisurely walk. Only the end is a challenge, but only in terms of the height at which you have to walk along the pavement. More information can be found in the entry Caminito del Rey – route, access, practical tips.
EL TORCAL
An area of 17 square kilometers is a veritable lunar landscape. This is due to the karst phenomena to which the El Torcal reserve owes its appearance. It is the largest cluster of karst rock formations in Europe. You can visit the reserve starting from the Tourist Center, where you can park and see multimedia presentations devoted to the origins of this place. From here, two paths of different lengths start that lead to the Mirador Las Ventanillas viewpoint – near the center and the third one that ends at a different point.
