5 UNUSUAL ATTRACTIONS OF ANDALUSIA part. 2

JUNTA DE LOS RIOS – OTIVAR
Near the town of Otivar (approx. 50 km north-east of Nerja) there is a fabulous gorge of the Rio Verde river with natural pools. If you like nature and active recreation, a trip to Junta de los Rios is a bull’s eye. As with the Rio Chillar, you wade in the river, but there are also steep cliffs to be climbed by rope, waterfalls and a suspension bridge. The tour is not for children.

SIERRA NEVADA
Located in the province of Granada, the Sierra Nevada mountain range is primarily the southernmost ski resort. Spain’s highest peak, Mulhacén (3,482 meters above sea level), is also located here. It is worth going to Trevelez, the highest village in Spain. If you are visiting the nearby Alhambra, the drive to Sierra Nevada will be a real respite – it is definitely cooler than Granada, besides, beautiful views, raw nature and animals at your fingertips.

CAVES IN NERJA
Cueva de Nerja is one of the largest caves in Spain. There you will find the largest cave infiltration in the world, entered in the Guinness Book of Records, reaching 32 m in height. The cave is divided into several galleries, and individual karst forms become more attractive due to colorful illuminations. The cave is well adapted for tourists and can be visited all year round.

COSTA DE LA LUZ
Costa del Sol is a coast full of sun and endless beaches. However, they are not very pretty. Gray, often dirty sand mixed with stones is a common sight. If seaweed comes to this, the Costa de la Luz, located between Tarifa and Huelva, will be the best alternative. Yellow, fine sand, ocean, cliffs and beautiful dunes are the visiting card of that coast. It is worth visiting Valdevaqueros beach, where a real kitesurfer show takes place, or Punta Paloma, where you can enjoy a spa in the form of a clay mask applied to the whole body. Also noteworthy is the Bologna beach with Roman ruins and the Trafalgar beach with a lighthouse located a little further away. If you like the cliffs, you should definitely see the beaches sheltered by the Barbate Cliffs.

GUADIX
Guadix, located near Sierra Nevada, is a very unusual place. To this day, and the settlement remembers a thousand years before Christ, people live there in caves! In Barrio de las Cuevas, a district with over two thousand caves, whole families live in such a place. The cottages are underground and carved out of limestone rocks. Their existence is indicated by ventilation chimneys protruding from the ground. Why did people choose this way of life? For purely practical reasons: it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Of course, you can see what such an apartment looks like. In the Plaza padre Proveda, next to the Ermita Nueva church, there is a museum, displaying eight rooms full of exhibits from the turn of the 20th century.
